Our Tutors – Chris Williams

Christopher Williams is a Welsh pianist, composer, conductor, and educator with a dynamic career spanning performance, recording, and teaching. A graduate of Cardiff University, he is currently Assistant Director of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, and a regular pianist with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, performing at the BBC Proms and recording for Chandos, Hyperion, and Naxos

Since 1997, Christopher has been a staff accompanist at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and has taught piano at Cardiff University since 2001. He studied with Richard McMahon, Simon Shewring, and Martin Jones, and was greatly influenced by his first teacher, Walter Ryan, who sparked his interest in lesser-known repertoire. This passion led to performances of rarely heard concertos by Reinecke and Rubinstein

Highly sought-after as a chamber musician, Christopher has collaborated with leading artists such as Philippe Schartz, Catherine Tanner-Williams, Tim Thorpe, David Childs, and Tine Thing Helseth, with recordings released on Chandos, Willowhayne, and Naxos. His solo album of Brahms transcriptions on Naxos’ Grand Piano label was named CD of the Week on NDR Kultur and praised for its technical brilliance and musical depth.

A familiar face on BBC TV and radio, Christopher was an official accompanist for BBC Young Musician of the Year 2020, and has also been broadcast on Radio Luxembourg and NDR

As a composer, he has written several works for brass, including Chaos is a Ladder (trombone) and Song of the Narrow Sea (trumpet), with XX Mountains of Abstract Thought broadcast on Lyric FM and released by Naxos. .
