Our Tutors – Richard Marshall

Richard Marshall is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest cornet players. Described by Elgar Howarth as “the most outstanding cornet player this country has ever produced,” Richard is Principal Cornet of the legendary Black Dyke Band, holding what’s known as the “hottest seat in banding.” Prior to joining in 2006, he spent ten years as Principal Cornet with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band

An acclaimed soloist, Richard has released five solo albums — including Blaze and Eminence, both named Solo CD of the Year. He has premiered major works written for him by leading composers, including Elgar Howarth’s Sonatina and Edward Gregson’s Cornet Concerto. His collaboration with Philip Wilby also led to the publication of Essentials, a contemporary cornet study book for advanced players.

Richard is a committed educator, teaching at the Royal Northern College of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire, and Salford University. He also tutors for the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain and the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band.

A Besson Artist and Clinician, Richard performs exclusively on the Prestige Cornet with his own RM1 Signature mouthpiece. His career has taken him to iconic venues around the world, including Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall, cementing his place as a true ambassador of the brass band tradition.
