Our Tutors – Tom Hutchinson

Tom Hutchinson is recognised as one of the world’s leading cornet players. He began playing at nine with his local band, Stannington, and by age fifteen was leading the Rothwell Temperance Band. A former soloist and leader with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, Tom was invited by Dr. Nicholas Childs to join the Black Dyke Band, where he played for four years and contributed to major contest victories across the UK and Europe.

After graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2009, Tom was appointed Principal Cornet of the Cory Band. Under his leadership, Cory has enjoyed an era of extraordinary success — including multiple British Open, European, Brass in Concert, and National Championship titles. He has twice been named the band’s Player of the Year and was central to Cory’s historic Grand Slam and decade-long reign as the world’s No.1 ranked brass band.

In addition to his performance career, Tom is a passionate educator. He is Professor of Cornet at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and a tutor for the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain. A Besson Artist, he represents the Buffet Crampon Group internationally and has performed as a soloist in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, and the USA. His debut solo album In Principal has received widespread acclaim.
