Prof. Nicholas Childs is a globally renowned conductor, euphonium soloist, producer, and educator, widely celebrated for his leadership in the brass band world. His early success came performing internationally with his brother as The Childs Brothers, captivating audiences in major concert halls across the globe.
As Principal Conductor and Director of Music of the world-famous Black Dyke Band, Dr. Childs has achieved sustained contest success and led a wave of innovation through bold programming and major premieres by composers such as Philip Wilby, Michael Ball, and Peter Graham. His visionary leadership has made Black Dyke a cornerstone of modern brass band music, including landmark performances at prestigious venues like London’s Royal Albert Hall.
A passionate advocate for new music, Dr. Childs is the founder of Doyen Recordings, a pioneering label with the largest catalogue of brass band recordings. His productions span iconic works and collaborations with ensembles like the International Staff Band, BBC Philharmonic, and Canadian Brass.
Beyond the stage, Dr. Childs is a respected educator and Senior Tutor in Brass Band Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he has taught for over a decade. He also holds positions with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, Brass Band Heritage Trust, and has guest-conducted bands across Europe, North America, and Asia, winning national championships in France, Norway, Scotland, and Wales.
From his roots in the Tredegar Youth Band in Wales to the pinnacle of the global brass scene, Dr. Childs remains dedicated to pushing boundaries, mentoring the next generation, and championing the brass band tradition on the world stage.
