A message from the Course Director – IBBSS 2026 Course to return to the beachside Bay Campus

As IBBSS 2026 approaches, the course is in full development and delegates have recently received an update from the new Course Director Colonel David Barringer MVO MBE – David said:

‘This year marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for IBBSS, and we are absolutely thrilled to be welcoming our delegates to a course that is set to inspire, challenge, and energise in equal measure. Whether returning or joining us for the first time, delegates are part of something very special.’

Due to some unforeseen operational clashes at the Brangwyn Hall, our home for the week will primarily be the stunning Bay Campus, where the Great Hall will once again serve as the hub of our rehearsals and musical activity. Just a stone’s throw from the beach, the campus offers a truly unique setting – many of our delegates travel from across the globe not only for the music, but to enjoy a wonderful summer experience by the sea. It’s a perfect blend of intensive music-making and a vibrant, international summer atmosphere.

Our faculty. We are proud to present an exceptional artistic team. Our conductors, Professor Nick Childs, Dr Tom Davoren, and Colonel David Barringer, as well as Dr Frank Renton leading the Conductors course, bring a wealth of experience and inspiration. I am thrilled to be joined by three such outstanding musicians representing both tradition and innovation in the brass band movement:

Dr. Tom Davoren — representing the new generation of brass band leadership, Dr. Davoren brings fresh energy and creativity. In addition to his conducting role, he will lead a specialist composition masterclass, sharing his expertise as a composer of international repute.

Professor Nicholas Childs — long-time Course Director of the IBBSS faculty and one of the world’s most respected brass band conductors, continuing his invaluable role in coaching and leadership.

Frank Renton — a celebrated veteran conductor, bbc broadcaster, and educator whose deep insight and charismatic teaching continues to inspire generations of musicians.

They are joined by an experienced world-class tutor team including Richard Marshall, Tom Hutchinson, Owen Farr, Gary Curtin, Brett Baker, Matt Routley, and Mark Thackrah, alongside additional support from other specialists and interns (to be announced) throughout the week.

Arrival will be on Sunday 26th July from 12 noon onwards, with the course concluding on the morning of Saturday 1st August. Bed and Breakfast will be provided for those on the full residential package at the Bay Campus, with dinner provided everyday for all delegates. We have an enhanced catering package this year with a commitment for ‘excellence’ from award winning caterers.

We are incredibly excited about what lies ahead and cannot wait to welcome you to Swansea this summer for a week of outstanding music-making, new friendships and unforgettable experiences.

With warmest regards,

David
